☕ Coffee and Quiet with Derek Wolf
Yesterday we were floating in the pool, talking about all kinds of things when the conversation drifted toward old friends.
It made me wonder how many people have actually known me for most of my life.
There is one cousin.
One friend I met back in seventh grade.
After that, life seems to move in waves. People come into our lives through school, work, neighborhoods, hobbies, and chance meetings. Some stay for years. Most eventually drift away.
Sometimes we don't even notice when it happens. One day you're talking every week. Then every few months. Then years go by before you realize how long it's been.
Every now and then a note shows up from someone I haven't seen in years.
"I'm still in the world."
"You're still in the world."
"I remember when."
Sometimes that's all the conversation needs to be.
No catching up on everything that happened. No trying to fill in all the missing years. Just a reminder that two people once shared a small piece of life together, and somehow that still matters.
Then someone asked a question I hadn't thought about before.
If tomorrow you could be friends with most of the people you've known all over again, would you?
I wasn't as quick to answer as I thought I'd be.
Some friendships belonged exactly where they were in life. Others make you wonder what would have happened if you had stayed in touch.
Maybe that's a better question than an answer.
Hugzzs,
🌺 Derek Wolf
I'll talk to you in the emails.
