☕ Coffee and Quiet with Derek Wolf
The other day, a friend and I finally went fishing after talking about it for what seemed like forever. Life has a way of doing that. We talk about getting together next week, then next month, and before long we're wondering why we waited so long.
Years ago, fishing was simple. You grabbed a pole, maybe a little bait, and headed for the water. Whatever happened after that was just part of the day.
Things have changed a little over the years.
Now we park the truck, unfold the little portable wagon, and start loading it up. Folding chairs, hats, cold water, snacks, a bucket of bait, and a big umbrella. Somewhere along the way, comfort became part of the fishing trip.
The funny thing is, neither of us seems to mind. In fact, setting everything up has become part of the ritual. By the time the chairs are unfolded and the lines are in the water, it already feels like we've accomplished something.
There we sat with our lines in the water, talking about whatever came to mind. Every now and then we'd stop talking just long enough to watch a fish swim by, even if it had no interest in our hook.
Years ago, I probably would have called that a slow day. I would have measured the trip by what we caught.
These days, I think I measure it a little differently.
The fish are still part of the story. They just aren't the whole story anymore.
Sometimes the best part of a fishing trip is discovering you never really needed the fish to have a good day.
Hugzzs,
