☕ Coffee and Quiet with Derek Wolf
Yesterday I was talking with someone who owns a secondhand sporting goods store. We were standing there visiting when the conversation drifted toward the economy, the way conversations often do these days.
People around us were talking about rising prices, housing, and how much life has changed over the past few years.
Then he said something that made the whole conversation take a different direction.
He told us business had been some of the best he'd ever seen.
At first, that didn't seem to fit what everyone else was saying.
Then he explained.
Many of the people coming into his store weren't shopping for a camping trip. They were buying good tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, and equipment they could depend on because, for now, that's how they were getting by.
The room became a little quieter after that.
Nobody at the table celebrated that.
Nobody argued about it.
It was simply another way of looking at the very same conversation.
It reminded me that sometimes we think we understand what's happening because we've seen one small part of the picture. Then someone shares a story from their own corner of the world, and suddenly the picture becomes a little larger.
We all see life through the windows we're standing beside.
That one stayed with me.
