Is it broke?

☕ Coffee and Quiet with Derek Wolf

The other day I heard a story that made me smile. A grandmother called her grandson and told him her washing machine had broken. Like a lot of grandsons, he wanted to help as quickly as he could.

He drove straight to the appliance store. While he was there, he called her and asked what model she had so he could make sure he bought the right replacement.

There was a little silence on the other end of the phone.

Then she said, "Why are you buying a new one?"

He answered, "Because yours is broken."

She laughed and replied, "I didn't say I needed a new washing machine. I said this one needs to be fixed."

I could almost picture the smile on her face.

That little story stayed with me.

Maybe it's because so many people grew up believing that taking care of something was just part of life. If it could be repaired, you repaired it. If it could keep serving you for another ten years, you gave it the chance.

They didn't see every broken thing as something to replace. Sometimes it just needed a little attention, a new part, or someone willing to spend the time fixing it.

I don't know if that way of thinking was better. It was certainly different.

There's something comforting about knowing not everything has to be thrown away the moment it stops working.
