Key West on a Saturday

☕ Coffee and Quiet with Derek Wolf

A couple of weeks ago we were in Key West. I wandered into a little shop to buy a T-shirt and maybe a hat. It wasn't crowded. Just one of those places where you expect to look around for a few minutes and maybe visit with whoever's behind the counter.

The young woman behind the counter never looked up from her phone. She tapped the screen so I could pay, but that was about it. No eye contact. No conversation. I stood there for a second, thinking maybe there was something else I was supposed to do.

Then I realized... that was the whole transaction.

I walked back out into the sunshine and headed down the street, but the moment stayed with me longer than I expected.

It wasn't really about the phone.

It was about being somewhere without really being there.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized how easy it is to do. We sit at dinner thinking about tomorrow. We go on vacation thinking about work. We drive home replaying conversations that already happened. We spend time with people while our attention is somewhere else.

Sometimes our body arrives long before our mind does.

And every once in a while we catch ourselves wondering where the day went, even though we were there the whole time.

If you're not here now...

...you're probably not there when you get there either.

Hugzzs,
