☕ Coffee and Quiet with Derek Wolf
This morning I was sitting behind a friend's table at the outdoor market while people stopped by to buy produce and homemade desserts. There was a steady rhythm to it all.
Someone would buy tomatoes, another person would ask about the pies, and before long someone else would wander over just to talk for a while.A woman walked up and started talking. At first it was just casual conversation, but after a minute everyone else drifted away.
I stayed.
She looked over at me, and we stepped a little off to the side so we wouldn't block the table.
She told me she knew she wanted her life to be different. Not because she disliked the one she had. She just knew this wasn't the life she wanted anymore. She wasn't asking for advice. I think she simply needed to say the words out loud to someone who would listen.
We talked for a few minutes, and then she smiled, thanked me, and walked away. The market picked right back up as if nothing had happened, but I found myself thinking about our conversation all the way home.
There was something that never came up while we were talking.
Every change gives us something, but it usually asks for something in return. More free time might mean less income. A smaller home might mean less to take care of. More time with family might mean saying no to something else. Every new chapter has a price of admission.
I suppose that's why change can feel both exciting and uncertain at the same time. We usually know what we're hoping to gain. We just don't always know what we're willing to give up until the moment arrives.
That stayed with me today.
