☕ Coffee and Quiet with Derek Wolf
I woke up this morning with Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi playing in my head. I hadn't heard it in a while, and I couldn't figure out why that song was there.
Then I remembered a conversation I had a few days ago.
An 80-year-old woman was telling me about the little house her father built back in 1957. You could hear how much she loved that place. She laughed as she talked, but underneath the laughter was a little frustration. Before we finished talking, she said, "I think I'm just going to plant more shrubs."
A couple of days later, I mentioned her story to someone else, and they smiled and said, "Well, if you can't see it, you can't write it up."
That simple comment stayed with me.
Ever since then, I've found myself noticing something I never paid much attention to before. Driving through older neighborhoods, I catch myself looking at hedges that have grown over decades, shrubs planted along property lines, and little trees standing where someone decided they wanted a little more privacy.
Some were probably planted to block traffic. Others to soften the afternoon sun. Maybe a few were simply there because someone liked how they looked.
One conversation changed what I noticed.
Now I can't drive through an older neighborhood without wondering how many stories are quietly growing behind those hedges.
Just another day of living.
