I finally made it to my yearly doctor's appointment.
It had only taken about a year.
There were insurance approvals, appointments booked months out, approvals that expired while I was waiting, and then starting the whole process over again. By the time I finally sat down in the exam room, I almost forgot why I was there.
After enough phone calls and enough waiting, the appointment itself almost felt like the reward.
The doctor walked in, looked at my chart, smiled, and said, "Well... we finally made it."
I laughed and said, "I wasn't sure either one of us was ever going to see the other again."
We both laughed because we knew exactly what the other meant. Neither one of us had caused the delay. We had both simply been working our way through a system that seemed to have a mind of its own.
For a minute we weren't talking about insurance or appointments. We were just two people who had both been caught in the same maze.
It's easy to forget that the person sitting across the counter didn't create the rules. The person answering the phone didn't design the paperwork. Most days they're just trying to help the next person in line while finding their own way through it all.
Sometimes all it takes is one shared laugh to remember there's another human being on the other side of the desk.
