☕ Coffee and Quiet with Derek Wolf
This morning I woke up with "Take the Long Way Home" by Roger Hodgson playing in my mind. It's funny how a song can show up before your feet even hit the floor.
Sometimes it isn't the lyrics that stay with you. It's the feeling. It quietly walks through old memories, reminds you of things you hadn't thought about in years, and before you know it you're looking at life a little differently than you did just a few minutes earlier.Life is expensive. Rent is expensive. Houses are expensive. New cars come with payments, and older cars come with repair bills. Too many people put off going to the doctor because they simply can't afford the visit. Young people are trying to build a future while the price of almost everything keeps moving farther away. For many, just keeping up has become a full-time job.
Some of life's greatest treasures don't cost anything. The tragedy is that life has become so expensive that many people no longer have the freedom to enjoy them.
Sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee. Reading a good book. Working in the garden. Painting. Riding a horse down a quiet trail. Taking a walk with no destination. Taking the long way home because there was no reason to be in a hurry.
Those moments were never about money. They were about having enough room in life to breathe. To notice the sunset instead of the clock. To spend an afternoon doing something that didn't have to accomplish anything except make you smile. Those simple moments have always been there. Sometimes we just forget they're waiting for us.
Maybe that's what "Take the Long Way Home" reminds us. Some of life's greatest treasures don't cost anything, but they do require something that's becoming harder to find... time.
I think I'll go have waffles.
