☕ Coffee and Quiet with Derek Wolf
This morning I was sitting in the dark taking one of my memory walks, letting my mind wander through old conversations, people, songs, places, mistakes, and good moments until something caught my attention.
When it does, I stay there for a while and let it unfold, looking for the humanity in whatever comes back. This morning my mind stopped on "Thank U" by Alanis Morissette.Years ago, a woman told me about someone who borrowed money from her and never paid it back. She was frustrated until someone said, "Maybe you didn't lose the money. Maybe that's what it cost to get that person out of your life."
She laughed when she told me that.
Sometimes the gift isn't what someone gave you. It's what they finally showed you.
Part of getting older may be learning to recognize the gift while it's still unfolding in front of you. Most of the time we probably don't. Someone leaves, something ends, or somebody continually shows us who they are. Years later, we finally understand what we were being shown.
Of course, I've wondered how many times I've been that gift for somebody else.
We're all trying to get through and do the best we can. Sometimes our best could use a little improvement.
Maybe that's what "Thank U" left me with this morning.
Sometimes gratitude arrives long after the gift.
Hugzzs,
